Andy Walmsley, born in Preston, England in 1959, has lived a life shaped by adventure, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of new experiences. Originally drawn to mountaineering, his path changed dramatically after a motorcycle accident in 1981 resulted in the loss of his right arm. Refusing to let adversity define him, Andy transitioned to the demanding sport of fell running, dedicating decades to racing across Britain’s most rugged landscapes.
Alongside his athletic pursuits, Andy built a successful career in the aerospace industry and nurtured a passion for writing. He authored two walking guides for Cicerone Press, contributed to The Fell Runner magazine, and wrote for various motoring publications—combining technical expertise with personal storytelling.
Andy’s personal life has been marked by both challenge and perseverance. After the end of his first marriage in 1992, he became a single father, raising his daughter while continuing his demanding career and athletic commitments. His life is a testament to grit, focus, and the ability to adapt and thrive through change.
At 58, Andy retired from engineering and competitive sport, embarking on a bold new journey with his second wife, Gill. They relocated to Asturias, Northern Spain, where Andy took up recumbent trike riding and reignited his passion for writing. Since then, he has published a three-part memoir (Ánimo!), a guide to trike touring in Spain, and a book chronicling the realities of expat life in a lesser-known region of Europe.
His work is deeply personal, often humorous, and always honest—offering readers a rare look into a life lived to the fullest, with unwavering courage and curiosity.
Andy continues to write, with upcoming projects focused on fell running, cycling adventures, and exploring the landscapes and culture of rural Spain.
