ANDY WALMSLEY
Born in Preston, England, in 1959, Andy Walmsley’s lifelong passion for exploration and adventure was evident from a young age. Initially drawn to mountaineering, his pursuits were significantly altered by a motorcycle accident in 1981 that resulted in the loss of his right arm. Undeterred, Walmsley turned to the challenging sport of fell running, dedicating a substantial portion of his adult life to this extreme activity. While pursuing fell running, Walmsley also established a successful career in the aerospace industry. His passion for writing led him to author two walking guides for Cicerone Press and contribute articles to publications such as The Fell Runner and various motoring journals.
Throughout his life, Walmsley faced significant personal challenges. The dissolution of his first marriage in 1992 led him to become a single father to his young daughter. Despite these responsibilities, he remained committed to his career and fell running pursuits, demonstrating remarkable resilience and determination.
At the age of 58, Walmsley retired from both his career and competitive fell running. He seized this opportunity to embark on a new chapter with his second wife, Gill, relocating to Spain and reinventing himself as a trike rider and writer. Walmsley’s prolific writing career has yielded a diverse range of works, including a three-part autobiography, a guide to triking in Spain, and a book detailing his experiences of moving and settling in a foreign country. His passion for storytelling continues unabated, with plans for future publications on fell running and triking adventures in various regions of Spain.
